Chapter – 11 THE WATER CYCL
EXERCISE – 11 (ANSWER)
Here are the answers to the questions about water and the water cycle:
1. What is water vapour?
Water vapour is the gaseous phase of water, formed by the evaporation or boiling of liquid water or the sublimation of ice. It is transparent and invisible, unlike clouds or mist which are visible due to suspended water droplets.
2. How are clouds formed?
Clouds are formed through the process of condensation. As water vapor rises in the atmosphere, it cools and condenses into tiny liquid water droplets or ice crystals, which then accumulate around dust particles or other aerosols, forming visible clouds.
3. What will happen if you put some water in a freezer?
If you put water in a freezer, it will lose heat and freeze, turning into ice.
4. What will happen if a block of ice is kept on a plate?
If a block of ice is kept on a plate, it will absorb heat from the surroundings and melt, turning back into liquid water.
5. How many forms does water have?
Water primarily exists in three forms: solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (water vapor).
6. What is ice?
Ice is the solid state of water, formed when liquid water freezes at or below 0°C (32°F).
7. What happens when we cool the water vapour?
When water vapor is cooled, it undergoes condensation and changes into liquid water droplets or ice crystals, depending on the temperature.
8. Can you see water vapour in the air?
No, water vapor itself is invisible as it is a gas. What we often perceive as “steam” or “mist” is actually tiny suspended water droplets formed by condensation.
9. How can you make vapour from water?
You can make vapor from water by heating it, which causes it to evaporate, or by boiling it.
10. What is called the ‘water cycle’?
The water cycle is the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. It involves processes like evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection, where water changes states and moves through different reservoirs.
2. Write ‘True’ or ‘False’ :-
a) Water from clouds falls as rain.
True.
b) Water vapour is the liquid form of water.
False.
c) On cooling water changes into ice.
This statement is True.
d) Clouds are formed from water vapour.
This statement is True.
e) We get underground water from lakes.
This statement is False.
3. Fill in the Blanks:
1) The sun rays change water into water vapour.
2) The water vapour forms clouds.
3) The clouds bring us rain.
4) The rainwater goes into lakes, ponds, and seas.
5) The lakes and ponds are sources of water.
4. Match Column A with Column B:
Melting ice – water
Freezing water – ice
Heating water – vapour
Cooling vapour – water drops.
Vapour goes high – forms clouds
